#9: The Rejuvenating Power of Sunflowers
I absolutely love Sunflowers! Their majesty and beauty always makes me happy.
Moving past their visual aesthetic, Sunflowers have also been celebrated for its vitamin-rich “Sunflower Oil” - a common ingredient in skin care products due to its rejuvenating benefits.
I was interested to learn more about these gorgeous, yellow flowers that have been cultivated for thousands of years and share it on my blog.
According to the National Sunflower Association:
"Sunflower was a common crop among American Indian tribes throughout North America. Evidence suggests that the plant was cultivated by American Indians in present-day Arizona and New Mexico about 3000 BC. Some archaeologists suggest that sunflowers may have been domesticated before corn."
Originally used mostly in cakes or bread, and in time the skin and hair care benefits were recognized. Early spanish explorers evetnually brought Sunflower seeds to Western Europe where they were mainly used for ornamental purposes.
In 1716, a patent was granted for squeezing oil from sunflower seeds. In the late 19th century, Russian farmers were growing approximately 2 million acres of sunflowers. The industry came back to the U.S. to a new found popularity. By the 1970’s, US acreage for Sunflower was over 5 million because of the strong European demand for Sunflower Oil.
Sunflower seeds are cold-pressed at low temperatures, without the use of chemicals, to preserve their holistic nature. A natural powerful emollient, the oil adds hydration and smoothness to the skin. Sunflower Oil protects the skin, helps it retain water and is full of antioxidants and Vitamins A, C, K and D.
Some benefits delivered by sunflower oil include:
- Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation
- Soothes irritated skin
- Reduces redness and clears pores
- Gentle exfoliator
- Renowned natural anti-inflammatory properties
- Moisturizes and adds to healthy glow
- Helps destory acne causing bacteria
With Winter approaching, skin care products with Sunflower Oil will help manage the challenges that accompany cold weather. These sunflower-infused products are specially designed to help protect skin from environmental conditions and provide nutrients to cells.
And it's important to mention that Sunflower Oil will NOT clog pores and blends in well with many other products.

Here are some key facts that I uncovered during my research:
- There are 70 species of Sunflowers and they contain 1000 to 2000 seeds each.
- Sunflowers can actually grow to 30 feet tall.
- Not all sunflowers are yellow - some are brown, red, orange or purple.
- The French word for Sunflowers is tournesol which means “turns with the sun”.
- In addition to all the cosmetic and food uses mentioned above, they also absorb toxins. Millions were planted after the devastating tsunami destroyed reactors in the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.
